When we give a
public announcement about something we tend to do it in general terms. It´s
very difficult to explain case by case and device by device or scenario by
scenario, so it´s easier to use a “general” way when we provide instructions:
1) Safety: in case of an emergency
everything that is not tightened and secure will fly through the cabin like a projectile,
that includes mobile phones laptops tablets mp3 cam photo camera and any other
device. Statically speaking the most “dangerous” moments in a flight are during
take-off and landing so just in case we prepare the aircraft for an emergency,
which means not only securing the galley and many other places inside the
aircraft but also securing you from yourself. That is why we constantly insist
that you must not only place your bags in the over head compartment but also in
turning off any electronic device and placing it (generally) inside your bag. In
case of an emergency landing the sudden deceleration of the aircraft produces
dramatic changes in the G force, which means that whatever is not tightly
secure will “fly” through the cabin with an extreme speed and force that could
be deadly to others. So please, when we insist that you must turn off and store
your electronic devices we say it for a reason.
2) Communication: it´s a
scientific fact that many electronic devices (especially mobile phones) cause interference
between the control tower and the aircraft. So while the control tower is
giving specific instructions to the pilot and suddenly hear “No mum, he broke
up with me, I know that you liked him but give me a break” that could be hazardous
to the entire aircraft particularly in the “approach moment”, so just wait for 1
hour to make that phone call or whatever you need to do with your tweeting
devices. Problems in communication between the aircraft and the control tower
could end up a little bit worse than just an unreceived phone call, so this
time try to play smart and not be a pro label of stupidity.
