My dream was to fly:

And now my dream is to have a real dream if I can get some normal 8 hour non stop sleep.

Open Day EK: how does it work?

Dear X:
There is no problem in replying your inquires regarding  EK Cabin Crew Recruitment process. There are 3 basic instances for EK and in each one of them generally speaking only a 25 % goes through:

Open Day: this day it may be organized or not (depending in the country) by a third party agency or directly by EK staff. They are in charge of the pre selection of candidates for the second instance, Assessment Day.
What do they want in the Open Day? To start with there are certain criteria that are a must, so pay attention to them so you don´t waste your time during the event. The first thing is that you must reach 2 meters 12 centimeters standing in your tip toes with your arm fully extended, this is done because that´s the height to reach safety equipment inside the aircraft. Second, don´t have any visible tattoos even if you “paint” them for the event and you lie about it then in the medical revision in the clinic at Headquarters they will find out and you will get automatically fired, so don´t lie about it. Third, hepatitis C or HIV + are a mayor “no” to get the job, they simply don´t hire people that are carriers. Forth point, your body mass index must be a healthy one, flying is all about physical work and you must have a healthy one to do so. Fifth, you must be a minimum of 20 years and 9 months to apply for the company, when entering the country by law you must be 21 to work.

When you walk into this event usually they are very crowded and if it´s a “walk in at anytime” I really recommend you to go as early as you can. It is very simple, you just stay in your place in the queue and this different scenarios may happen:

      a. CV drop off, height test and a quick fire interview with the interviewer (they are usually ex cabin crew). The questions might be from “why would you like to work for EK?” “why do you want to change your current job?” “Tell me about this experience that you had as customer service in this company, what did you there?”. Answers should be simple, coherent and you must reflect a natural sense of peace and security when you develop your answer. Smile naturally, don´t fake it, don´t be hyper and always remember to say “good morning” “thank you” “have a nice day”. They don´t want “hyper” people, if you are calm and somehow introverted it´s better than to be hyper and super social. Talk to the people that are around you while you wait in the queue and be patient, if you hear someone saying a nasty comment about “it´s bad organized this event, the wait is too long” don´t listen to them, play stupid. Recruiters do see everything and take everything into consideration, even if you think that they are not seeing you or that you are far away from them. Results might be provided by e-mail to candidates or they could arrange a “get together” after the interview process is concluded giving a small personal envelope to each candidate of “you made it” or “you didn´t”.

      b. CV drop off, height test and written English exam. The exam consists in performing an essay in which you may choose 2 topics, you´ll have 15 minutes to do it. The subjects may be, “if you were to be a super hero which powers would you have, how you would use them and in how would you help with that” or “explain a traumatic situation in your life and what did you learn from it”. I always encourage choosing the first option but never write about have x-ray powers or to be invisible, those are bad choices. Results might be provided by e-mail to candidates or they could arrange a “get together” after the while interview process is concluded giving a small envelope to each candidate of “you made it” or “you didn´t”.

The other option is a programmed Open Day with a starting hour and it´s not a “walk in at anytime”. There you must be punctual so arrive 30 minutes earlier. Talk with candidates and just try to fit into the scene very calmly and smoothly, remember don´t by hyper. Then they will present you a 20 minutes video of EK (that you´ll find in youtube) and after it they will ask questions about the video, don´t participate in that and don´t raise your hand. Don´t ask questions about the video and don´t respond questions made by the recruiter, less interaction it's better; if you keep a low the profile higher are the chances. Then you have the CV drop off and a quick fire interview with the same dynamic that I explained before. Following that you´ll be joined in a group with 10 others and you´ll sit in a circle. There they will tell you to speak with the group about a random subject that may be “explain an odd experience and why was it odd”. While you share your experience with the group recruiters will hear you and will analyze your overall performance (including your CV information).

The important thing in this stage is to hear carefully what the other is saying and participate with others, remember that you´ll have to smile and don´t by hyper during this stage, try to use candidates names (you´ll have your name in a tag) when you direct to someone. Then you´ll be given a house organ about EK in which you will have to read out loud in front of the group, 4 to 8 lines of the text are read by each candidate. When all of that finishes recruiters will start saying names, those names that are said are: unfortunately you didn´t make it through. Also they could just thank everyone and send the results one by one through e-mail.

Your style during the event: it´s a must if you have long hair to pull it back and have a bun, if you have bob cut it´s okay don´t worry. Make up must be simple and fresh, try not to apply too much powder or base or too much blush. If you maintain your make up simple and formal it´s perfect but remember to apply the distinctive red lipstick. White shirt with a black or dark navy blue suit with skin color opaque stockings and don´t wear high hill shoes, they are unnecessary and will be uncomfortable as you might be standing for a long while. With medium height, thick heel shoes you´ll do just fine. Perfume must be simple and not too sweet or too strong. Nails must be cleaned and properly polished with a white neutral color. All of your information (CV and pictures) must be placed properly in a folder and take black pens with you. In your full body and face pictures this is a must, smile – show your teeth. It doesn´t matter if you think you´ll have them yellow or crooked, just smile and show them. It is very important in your CV to state that you have customer service experience and that you know how to be responsive and respectful to Management orders. Try to keep your CV as simple as possible and don´t over through too much information about absolutely all the tasks that you developed during your current or past experiences. Think that they must read and analyze hundreds of CV in each event, they search for key words, if you have your presentation as simple as possible those key words are easily read by them. Recruiters like to simplify their search and be as fast and responsive to criteria.

Extra information: take into consideration if you are going with a male friend that EK priority is currently given to male candidates that know how to speak / understand in an intermediate level or up German, Mandarin or Cantonese Chinese and Arabic – this is only applies to male candidates. Also, during some seasons certain Passport holders from certain countries don´t have as much of priority as other candidates with a different Passport from a different country. If you didn´t make the cut you´ll have to wait 6 or 3 months to re apply, this diverse from the country in which the Open Day is taking place and please don´t insist to know why you didn´t make it. Recruiters have a very strict “law” about not providing personal feedback about why you didn´t make it and if you insist it will take you nowhere – in the Open Day don´t insist specially if it is your first time / if you are reapplying because you didn´t make it through the Open Day in the last event don't insist eiter.

Last, if you have brackets or braces you will not get hired, first finish the treatment and then apply. The final issue is “I’m married, if I get hired may my husband move to Dubai with me?”. To tell you the truth that almost never happens, why? EK will only sponsor you in Dubai and will pay you your accommodation with your training and many other things, but only you. If you are legally married UAE will obviously recognize your marriage but for you to live with your husband you will have to do it outside EK accommodations and that is really expensive. Not only that, if you have children you’ll be totally responsible for them and your family and EK will not be their sponsor (this point is for cabin crew – pilots and first officers is completely another subject), so that is why priority is mostly given to single candidates.
Only ask if you made it through a Final Interview and didn´t make it in that instance but even sometimes you will not get an accurate answer, Assessment is another thing.

If you made it through the Open Day (OD) let me know that I´ll inform you in details with Assessment key points, procedures and guidelines.

All the best in the world and remember to keep it simple, elegant and calm. Best advice: even if it's a very important life decision don't take it too seriously.

Xoxo,
L

Complaint Manual for a Hotel Guest:

Even if you stay in a 5 stars Hotel from a mayor hotel brand you may encounter diverse problems and situations. In this list that I will mention you´ll find a “how-to” deal with diverse situations and most important to whom you should speak to obtain an accurate and fast response regarding the dimension of these 5 different situations:

1) Let´s start by check-in: it´s very common that in some destinations and in certain seasons Hotels are fully booked. In addition, many guests many times extend their stay for a couple of extra days and many do not communicate that to Front Desk, because of this when you arrive to the Hotel your room might be occupied. The first thing to do is try not to be keep calm in a very diplomatic way making a full statement that you are beyond exhaustion and that you are also extremely hungry because you had a long journey (even if you just had an hour flight) and that you wish to have your room immediately. This could lead to two roads with a probable wait line of an hour or two tops. The first is that you might be given an immediate room upgrade. The other one is that you´ll be given a complimentary meal while you wait. If the Front Desk employee tells you: “sorry Sir, your room is still not available (it´s way beyond the check-out time) and that they invite you to wait in the lobby” just ask how long do you have to wait. If the reply is “not long, housekeeping is cleaning the room” you´ll just have to hang around in the lobby for proximally 20 minutes. If those minutes passed and you still don´t have any response go back to the Front Desk and ask “what happened to my room?”. If they still tell you that you´ll have to wait, tell them that you wish to speak immediately to the Front Desk Manager and communicate to that person that “you are beyond exhaustion and that you are also extremely hungry because you had a long journey (even if you just had an hour flight) and that you wish to have your room immediately”. The most probable thing that could happen is that you´ll get your room with a small complimentary gift (bottle of champagne, box of bonbons, free meal voucher, etc.).

2) If the bell-boy brings your bags to your room and you are 100 % sure that the bag was in perfect conditions when you gave it to the bell-boy in the entrance and now it´s not, ask to speak immediately to the Concierge Manager in front of the bell-boy. Inform the Manager that you are 100 % sure that your bag was in perfect conditions when you gave it to the bell-boy at the entrance and that now it´s not. If the Concierge Manager doesn’t give you a complimentary “something” in regards of the broken bag ask to speak to the Guest Manager of the Hotel. Explain him / her the situation in a firmly tone making emphasis of the lack of responsibility of staff when performing duties. If he / she don't take any action concerning the situation ask to speak with the Hotel Manager. If you still lack of response write a letter to the Hotel Central explaining the circumstances using full names of all the staff that were involved in the incident and also attach a photo of the broken bag. Before leaving the Hotel leave a copy to the Hotel Manager and ask him to sign an extra copy in which you are gonna keep.

3) If you get food-poison: it is a very common “thing” to all travelers from every part of the world and in general terms it´s very difficult to detect the cause. Something that really shocked me is the fact that housekeeping generally cleans the tea cups or coffee mugs of your room only with a fast small water wash with no soap. That cup or mug might have been already used hundreds of times before you and in each occasion it might have been “cleaned” only by 2 sparks of water. As crew I have to really take care of my health and the first thing I do when I arrive to a Hotel is fill the sink with hot water, add shampoo and immerse the cup or mug for 15 minutes and then rinse it with boiling water from the kettle (that kills more bacteria and germs than just a small wash of cold water).  Another thing, if you get food-poison tell immediately to Front Desk or Guest Service, they must communicate what is happening to the Outlet Manager (the big boss from all the restaurants and bars from the Hotel) and you must insist that they ought to double check the health and hygiene of all the kitchen stations (each section of the kitchen). It is very common to find that the brigade du cuisine don´t wear masks or copings (the small doctor´s hat they use to prevent hair in your food) just because it´s uncomfortable to them. Internationally speaking all well renowned Hotels have the same safety, health and hygiene protocols for their kitchens and that includes: washing hands with soap and clean water, washing all dishes with soap and clean water, wear the copings or chef´s hat at all times, don´t show up to the kitchen if sick so on and so on. Also, if you see any of this and you are not sick just ask to speak with the Outlet Manager and inform him / her about what you saw; this small action might prevent you or others to get food poison.

4) Sometimes, even in a 5 star Hotel, housekeeping might be rude and totally out of place. For example you are in the bathroom minding your own business and housekeeping knocks your door even if you have the “do not disturb” sign on. You kindly tell the personnel to “return in another moment, please”. Then you hear a second knock and they tell you “okay madam, do you need anything else?” and then you reply “no, thank you, return later please”. A third knock is heard claiming that “they need to re-check the mini-bar” and you tell them again “return later please”, nevertheless they open the door and somehow you manage to fully close the bathroom with a matrix kick. Not only they might have walked into your room even if there are verbal and visual signs that clearly states “do not come in” but sometimes they even might leave the room dirty. If you want to make a complaint of the situation (or a similar one) go to the Front Desk and tell them that you wish to speak to the Housekeeping Manager or the Executive Housekeeper, any of them are in charge of the overall housekeeping duties and cleaning operations in the Hotel.

5) When you check-out sometimes you´ll find that in the invoice there are certain charges and expenses that shouldn´t be there (you never made them). If that is the case the first thing to do is to ask a clear copy of the invoice and check if the room number, name, date and signature corresponds to yours. If that is not the case tell the Front Desk clerk that the charges are wrong and that they must delete them from your invoice. The most probable thing that may happen is that the clerk asks the authorization from the Front Desk Manager to do so. Then you´ll have to explain once again to the Manager that the signature, the room number, the date and the name doesn´t correspond to yours and that they should double check future invoices and charges to prevent similar situation. Not very long time ago a very well known Hotel in Maldives gave me an invoice with a ridiculous charge of an extremely expensive dinner that I never had. When I explained that I never had that dinner the clerk didn´t believe me and kind off forced me to pay something that I never had. When I showed the clerk and Manager that the date in which the invoice was done was 1 day prior to the date of my arrival they just deleted the expense from my account and pretended that nothing happened.

Why can´t you use electronic devices during take-off and landing? 2 simple reasons

When we give a public announcement about something we tend to do it in general terms. It´s very difficult to explain case by case and device by device or scenario by scenario, so it´s easier to use a “general” way when we provide instructions:

   1) Safety: in case of an emergency everything that is not tightened and secure will fly through the cabin like a projectile, that includes mobile phones laptops tablets mp3 cam photo camera and any other device. Statically speaking the most “dangerous” moments in a flight are during take-off and landing so just in case we prepare the aircraft for an emergency, which means not only securing the galley and many other places inside the aircraft but also securing you from yourself. That is why we constantly insist that you must not only place your bags in the over head compartment but also in turning off any electronic device and placing it (generally) inside your bag. In case of an emergency landing the sudden deceleration of the aircraft produces dramatic changes in the G force, which means that whatever is not tightly secure will “fly” through the cabin with an extreme speed and force that could be deadly to others. So please, when we insist that you must turn off and store your electronic devices we say it for a reason.

  2) Communication: it´s a scientific fact that many electronic devices (especially mobile phones) cause interference between the control tower and the aircraft. So while the control tower is giving specific instructions to the pilot and suddenly hear “No mum, he broke up with me, I know that you liked him but give me a break” that could be hazardous to the entire aircraft particularly in the “approach moment”, so just wait for 1 hour to make that phone call or whatever you need to do with your tweeting devices. Problems in communication between the aircraft and the control tower could end up a little bit worse than just an unreceived phone call, so this time try to play smart and not be a pro label of stupidity.

Limits in space:

How many times had we said: “oh please, I hope that fat person doesn´t sit next to me”? It´s wrong but at the same time understandable and there is nothing bad about it. In an extra long haul journey in Economy class seated next to an obese person it may be extremely uncomfortable for both even if the extra wide passenger bought an extra seat. Not only it may be rough for the fat and the non fat but also for the ones seated in the next row.

Even so that extra wide person paid an extra fee for an extra seat many times it´s not an exact solution to improve their comfort, what happens to the seat pitch between seat rows? A belly is not only wide but also it´s big in length and I´ve seen many times that the whole robust body can barely fit onto the seat without almost touching with its legs or even tummy the seat in front of him. To give you an idea many obese passengers can´t use their tray table because it would hit their belly and they simply finish using the one they acquired from the extra seat. In other occasions I have seen passengers that can barely walk in comfort in the small aisle of the aircraft even if the airplane is considered to be wide body.

The use of facilities such as bathrooms or sky-bars (a sky-bar may be also considered nowadays by many airlines as the space prepared in the galley for passengers to have a phew drinks and snacks after the first meal service – it´s not necessarily a full scale bar as many airlines currently have), may be totally obsolete and in other cases but not always crew don´t allow that the extra wide customer to use the toilets located in Business class if he is travelling in Economy (Business class bathrooms tend to be bigger in wide body aircrafts). One of the reasons it´s that crew don´t want to bother other passengers while they sleep and as the obese client sometimes can hardly fit into the aisle they just don´t want to trouble the ones that are in their rest. Another cause for it it´s that if they are chilling in the sky-bar they take up so much space that it´s uncomfortable for other passengers to be there so crew generally prefer if the wide body customer just stay in their seats (to clear things out I would like to say that crew don´t kick out an obese passenger from the galley just because he is fat, they just prefer if he would stay in his seats that´s it).

An aircraft is design to fly, to provide the best possible comfort to passengers and crew and also it is design to crash. What do I mean “to crash”? I mean safety. The aircraft is sketched and built up in the best possible safety regulations and designs so in case of an emergency the airplane structure interacts properly with the incident and prevents important damages and injuries to its personnel. But one of the many things that caught my attention is that in the 90 seconds evacuation test of a new aircraft participants tend to be fit and all the safety cards and presentations of almost every airline are done by fit people. Okay, let´s imagine that the obese passenger acquires a Business class or First class ticket but, what about his safety and the safety of others?

Even more, Economy class seats are mainly designed for “normal” size people and here I find a great problem when it comes to the protection offered by the seat (of any class from any airline) in case of impact. When the aircraft has a rough deceleration the backrest of the seat bends automatically forward to protect the passenger from the collision. Obese passengers as they don´t have much space between them and the sit in front of them, the backrest doesn´t bend as it should because the physical proportions of the obese passenger are bigger than the design of the seat and this is a serious concern regarding safety.

The world needs to adapt to this unfortunate epidemic, that is why we may find diverse structures that tries to content in the best possible care diverse needs: bigger cars, bigger elevators, bigger cinema seats (not in all the places but in some) so on and so on. The causes for this disease are various and it´s not always the common thought of a poor diet or a sedentary way of life. There is a list of various causes that includes: diabetes – stress – hormonal factors such as hypothyroidism or even genetic causes as the “Cushing´s syndrome”.  “The obese suffer from social bias, prejudice and discrimination, on the part not only of the general public but also of health professionals” – World Health Organization, Obesity: preventing and managing the global epidemic.

Aircraft designers and airlines should also try to provide not only the best possible comfort but also the best possible care to all their passengers and that includes obese people,  isn´t that the message which airlines bombard their clientele nowadays? Comfort and safety for all?

Never: cultural rules vol. I

Never:

When you visit Asia never touch someone´s head. The head is considered to be the most important part of the body for Buddhist and Hindu and by touching it you are doing something very rude. So when a little child passes by you playing around don´t touch his head, it would be considered a serious offense.

Never:

Take a photo without asking permission (that personally I wouldn´t even ask) to an Arab woman wearing the veil (burka – niqab – chador) it is considered to be extremely rude. If you take a photo you better be a married woman and if you ask for permission you should also be a married woman.

Never:

Walk into a temple of any sort in the Buddhist, Hindu or Muslim religion wearing your shoes. Also don´t enter the temple with shorts or micro shorts. The most probable thing that will happen before entering is that staff will provide you with a sort of veil or disposable medic pants to enter.

Never:

Take photos inside of the Buddhist, Hindu or Muslim temples without asking permission first. Some places are holy and it is considered to be extremely rude to snap a picture so don´t take it personally if you pull out your phone that the guard tells you (sometimes not in a very kind way) to store back your phone.

Never:

While visiting India shoot a photo of the ceremony of an open crematorium, it is not nice or polite to take a picture of someone else´s love one dead body just to have a postcard of your holiday and it´s also considered to be very rude for the family.

Never:

Talk and ask directions to an Arab woman wearing the veil (burka – niqab – chador) the most probable thing is that they don´t reply back and if they do, it wouldn’t be pleasant for her or her spouse. If you are a woman it is okay; if you are a man, it´s not. If you are a man and don´t have any choice don´t stare or do much eye contact, just ask and stare at the map or the street.

Never:

Make a comment or stare in a bad way if Thai, Indi, Sri Lankan, Indonesian or barf while they eat. It´s just a common thing for them.

Never:

Enter a house in Japan or South Korea without taking your shoes first. It doesn´t matter if you are wearing the last Christian Louboutin or Nike, chances are higher to be hit by a bus than someone else stealing your shoes.

Never:

Ask were gay clubs or bars are in an Arab country. It is illegal and punishable by law to be gay.

#blanket4warmth: give a blanket give life

In phew months winter will arrive to many countries and each year thousands die of hypothermia or diseases related to the consequences of living inappropriately in such harsh conditions. I would like you to read this post and help me prevent this, I promise I won´t sound like a YouTube add.

Something that really shocked me is the amount of people that each year dies because of consequences of the harsh cold: hypothermia, strokes, heart attacks, embolism and the list goes on with a common conclusion, death. According to Clare Murphy (BBC Health correspondent) “for every degree the temperature drops below 18°C (64°F), deaths in the UK go up by nearly 1.5%”; “Age UK” in the year 2012 reported a total amount of 24.000 deaths related to direct consequences of living in cold homes.

According the article published in “The Telegraph” the 16th of February of 2012: “authorities in Russia said 205 people have died this year in the frigid cold, while Ukraine has had 112 cold fatalities and Poland had 107. Seven people have died in Romania in the past 24 hours, bringing the total there to 86 deaths. In Lithuania, there have been 23 deaths. Deaths were also reported in Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro and Slovenia.

So the only thing that I ask you is if you take away the blanket from the airplane please give to someone that really needs it; someone that may actually use the warmth and protection of the blanket. Is not a hard thing to do and by doing so you may really help someone else. Of course that a blanket won´t help much when temperatures reaches -10°C (14°F) but at least they would have some extra defense to protect against the hard conditions. If you have the will to do it you won´t have to do much effort. I´m not saying: “go and steal what´s considered to be an airline property”, I´m just saying that if you are going to take it with you just give it to someone else who can actually give it a real use.

Please forward it to your friends and acquaintances it will only take one second (only one second to try to make a change in the conscious of someone else and by doing so you may be helping a person in need): Facebook – Twitter – Instagram – Blog – BBM – What´s up, use the media that suits you the best. I know that you may do it and I know that you may understand what is to suffer from “something” in this world; if you do this you will diminish someone else´s pain.

What´s up / BBM example:

“Hey -X- how was your trip? If you took the airplane blanket with you give it to someone in real need, winter is coming and you know how cruel that may be”.
